What Is An Infrared Heat Loss Survey?
January 10, 2010 by Randy

What is a heat loss survey? If a picture as they say is worth a thousand words, an infrared picture can be worth a thousand dollars.
An infrared heat loss survey uses a state of the art camera or thermal imager to scan components of a house or building such as walls, roofs, floors, ducts, attics, and windows to identify temperature variances and moisture intrusion. Essentially, an infrared camera converts heat energy into a visible picture, unvisible to the human eye.
Using thermal imaging an infrared heat loss survey can detect:
- Missing insulation or voids in insulation
- Air leaks within a home’s walls and ceilings
- Air leaks within a home’s heating and air conditioning system including duct work
- Air leaks around a home’s doors and windows
- Air leaks around ceiling light fixtures and fans
Through detecting the above conditions, a home or building owner can take corrective action to prevent continued heating and cooling losses, potentially saving hundreds of dollars on future utility and energy bills.
